7 SEO tips that actually work for small businesses

SEO advice on the internet falls into two categories: obvious ("write good content") or impractical for small businesses ("build 10,000 backlinks"). This guide is neither.

These seven tactics have a proven ROI for small business websites. They don't require an SEO specialist or a five-figure monthly budget.

1. Nail your page titles and meta descriptions

Every page on your site should have a unique, descriptive title tag (50-60 characters) and meta description (150-160 characters). These are the first thing users see in search results. Make them compelling: include your primary keyword, your value proposition, and a call to action.

2. Use structured data (schema markup)

JSON-LD structured data helps search engines understand your content. Add LocalBusiness schema for your address and hours, Product schema for what you sell, and FAQ schema for common questions. Google often uses this data for rich results, which dramatically improve click-through rates.

3. Optimize for local search

If you serve a specific geographic area, claim your Google Business Profile, ensure your NAP (name, address, phone) is consistent across all directories, and get reviews from satisfied customers. Local SEO is the highest-ROI channel for most small businesses.

4. Speed matters more than you think

Google has confirmed that page speed is a ranking factor. But more importantly, 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load. A fast site does not just rank better. It converts better.

5. Write for featured snippets

Featured snippets (position 0) drive massive traffic. Structure your content to answer specific questions: use H2s with question phrasing, then provide concise answers in the paragraph that follows. Lists, tables, and step-by-step instructions are also snippet-friendly formats.

6. Build topical authority

Instead of writing one article about "web design," write 5-10 articles covering every aspect: cost, process, technologies, case studies, comparisons. Google recognizes topical depth. A cluster of interlinked articles on related topics sends a strong relevance signal.

7. Fix your technical foundations

Run your site through Google Search Console and fix: crawl errors, broken links, missing alt text, duplicate content, and slow pages. These technical issues are the lowest-hanging fruit in SEO. Fix them and you'll see results within weeks.
